PhD scholarship-Polymer/Colloid Science: High performance BioMimetic Materials (Germany)
We offer an attractive position for a PhD thesis within an interdisciplinary research environment, combining high-performance biological materials with bio-mimetic concepts and materials science applications. The project focuses on the utilization of nanocellulose and nanochitin fibers, which are among the strongest and stiffest natural materials (natural steel or Kevlar). These fibers are nowadays available by special processing of wood or crustaceans and represent a new class of highly attractive and renewable biomaterials. The main scope of this thesis focuses on the preparation of biomimetic composite materials (bulk and fibers) with excellent mechanical properties and added functionality relevant for device applications. The characterization of these materials will make full use of state-of-the art electron and atomic force microscopy, as well as in-depth analysis of the mechanical and functional properties.
The DWI at the RWTH Aachen University (Germany) provides a multidiscipli-nary, stimulating and open research environment. The project is designed to be at the forefront of present research of biomimetic materials and we aim to publish at the highest-level scientific journals.
Research in this emerging field will open up career possibilities in both science and industry. We are open to applications of highly motivated and talented students with a solid background in chemistry, physics or related fields. Experience in (nano)cellulosics, polysaccharides, synthetic polymer chemistry or mechanical testing and microscopy is a plus. Please send in your application with a letter of motivation, resume and M.Sc. degree (or equivalent).
The program starts in 2012 for a duration of 36 months. The working language is English. The PhD thesis can written in English too.

Respected Sir,
My name is Dipankar Ghosh. I had done my M.Tech in Polymer Science & Rubber Technology from Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur (INDIA) in 2010. I also did M.Sc in Chemistry & Chemical Technology (Organic Chemistry & Polymer Science special) and B.Sc in Chemistry. I had worked on the synthesis of styrene-EHA, and MMA-EHA block copolymer by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) under Prof. Nikhil Kumar Singha, IIT Kharagpur, India. Also I have some experience on RAFT polymerization technique. Currently I am trying to synthesis of organic silane encaping styrene based acrylic copolymer by ATRP for adhesive and coating application. Also I am working on solvent free polyester polyol, 1K, 2K polyurethane adhesive; water based polyurethane dispersion (PUD), grafting of acrylic polymer on PUD, Epoxy adhesive and carbon nanotube-epoxy dispersion for adhesive application, Nano materials dispersion on PU to make antiscratching material. EVA, SIS, Polyolefin based hot melt adhesive, Acrylic based emulsion for coating & pressure sensitive tape application, synthesis of polyvinyl acetate by solution polymerization in a reputed adhesive company (Pidilite Industries limited) as an ‘Assistant Manager’ R&D department, Mumbai, India. I am Very much interested to join in your lab to pursue my PhD in this project. Kindly consider me. Kindly let me know the required information’s to join in your research group. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanking You
Yours faithfully
Dipankar Ghosh
