PhD scholarship in Soil- and Groundwater Remediation (Leibzig, Germany)
Within the AIF-Cooperation-Project (CO2-Biostimulation Technology for Soil- and Groundwater Remediation) between the UFZ (Department of Soil Physics), the University of Cottbus and the Sensatec Ltd, the UFZ invites applications of a: research position: PhD/ PostDoc (m/f) code digit – 155/2011 The UFZ-subproject is focused on: Laboratory Experiments and Computer Simulations at Pore Scale and Bench Scale. We are looking for candidates, which have a Master, Diploma or PhD degree in geosciences, engineer sciences or physics with a background in numerical mathematics and informatics. Our working group Experimental Simulation and Modeling has a longstanding experience in two-fluid physics and numerics, bench-scale experiments and field experiments. The main goal of the AIF-project is a process visualization using both optical methods and X-ray-spectroscopy. To bridge pore scale- and continuum scale processes, the pore-size distribution of the sediment used in the Hele-Shaw cell will be investigated by 3D-X-ray tomography. The 3D-pore-size distribution and pore topology is used for the construction of a micro-model, so that pore scale processes can be investigated. The modeling will be done together with an international partner at the University of British Columbia, Canada. The applicant will stay 2 months at this University.
The program starts in March 2012 for a total duration of 36 months. English is the working language

Subject Requirements (Qualification)
The position will be available for 3 years (01.01.2012-31.12.2014). The place of work is Halle (Saale), Germany. Salary will be according to the appropriate civil service guidelines, up to level 13 TVöD (70%). The successful candidate will be working in a highly interdisciplinary research environment with excellent facilities and motivated colleagues. Women are explicitly encouraged to apply to increase their share in science and research. Physically handicapped persons will be favoured if they are equally qualified.
