Book: Crossing and Controlling Borders. Immigration Policies and their Impact on Migrants’ Journeys

Crossing borders has been always a great challenge for human beings. This volume explores the policies of border controls and their impact on migrants’ journeys. Two major areas of immigration are analysed: the European Union and the United States of America. Empirical insights from ethnography with approaches from political science are combined in this book to highlight the impact of migration control policies on migration routes, migrants´ lives and policies of origin, transit and targeted countries.

For what concerns Africa, two important migration trends have been considered: the migration of Senegalese and that of Moroccans in the European Union. As a departure point and a transit country for many migrants from Sub-Saharan-Africa, Senegal plays an important role in migration management between Europe and Africa. In a contribution entitled “The Senegalese Predicament: Migration from Senegal to Europe: Policies, Control, and Implementation”, Florence Tsagué Assopgoum examines some of the main trends of migration from Senegal to Europe. Agricultural, political and economic crisis, overfishing by European companies are some of the factors which turn many people in Senegal into migrants or would-be-migrants. Senegal’s migration policy, migrant’s interests and those of European countries to curb irregular migration from Africa put this country in a predicament.

As Senegal, Morocco is an important emigration, transit and immigration country too. In the contribution ““It’s been the best journey of my life”: Governing migration and migrants’ strategies in front of Europe’s borders: Morocco”, Gerda Heck shows the effect of the changing European migration politics on the situation of migrants in Morocco and how these migrants develop different strategies to migrate Europe.

Further contributions of important scholars show how the problem of borders control is becoming more and more essential for the concerned countries in migration issues. This volume must be read to grasp the major points of borders control, migration policies and implementation in Europe and America
