The Department of Energy Conversion and Storage at the Technical University of Denmark is increasing its research activities in Lithium batteries – a technology for clean and efficient electricity storage.

Lithium ion batteries constitute one of the most common electricity sources for small and portable electronic devices. It is known that thermal cycling and high power density shortens the battery lifetime. However, the detailed coupling between degradation and battery usage is still not fully understood.

For a successful usage of lithium batteries in medium to large scale applications such as cars, it is necessary to match the characteristics of the battery modules with the application. In particular, it is important to determine the wear of the modules when exposed to specific operating patterns.

Job description
The project focus is on electrochemical characterization and modeling of different types of lithium batteries under different operating conditions such as state of charge, depth of discharge, temperature and charge/discharge current. The degradation mechanisms will be investigated using techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) combined with X-ray diffractive analysis (XRD) and small and wide angle X-ray spectroscopy (SAXS-WAXS).

It is the aim of the project to get a better understanding of the thermal, mechanical and electrochemical processes involved in the battery module wear and link the wear to certain operating patterns.


  • M.Sc. in engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry or similar
  • Preferably experience with electrochemistry and experimental methods in solid state chemistry or physics
  • Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamical group
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
