SNSF research project:

« Offensive Discourse in Political Arenas: Forms, Causes, and Effects of Negativism in Politics »

The Social and Political Research Institute (RESOP), at the University of Geneva, in collaboration with the Department of Political Science and International Relations (DSPRI) offers a position for PhD student (candoc) within the framework of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) research project « Offensive Discourse in Political Arenas: Forms, Causes, and Effects of Negativism in Politics ».

The research project aims at shedding light in a comparative perspective on the importance and effects of negative discourse on Swiss political system (direct democracy, elections, parliamentary debates, civil society). The project’s main goal is to uncover forms and causes of negativism (such as the level of negative campaigning) in Swiss political debates, as well as its effects (e.g. on opinion formation).

The research project is directed by Prof. Marco Giugni and Dr. Alessandro Nai.

Description and terms of employment

Candoc position at 60%, according to the SNSF pay scale (about CHF 41’000 / year during the first year, plus annuities from the 2nd year on). The duration of the appointment is 3 years, non renewable. The chosen candidate will work at the Social and Political Research Institute (RESOP), at the University of Geneva, with an affiliation to the Department of Political Science and International Relations (DSPRI). He/she commits to prepare a PhD dissertation on the project’s topics. Starting date: February 1st, 2012.

Profile

We are looking for candidates with a strong interest in the project’s topics. Candidates should justify knowledge or interest in contemporary political behaviour literature, particularly on issues concerning opinion formation, voting dynamics, and political campaigning.
Candidates should furthermore respond to the following criteria:
– Master Degree in political science, or related social-sciences disciplines;
– Willingness to prepare a PhD dissertation on the project’s topics;
– Excellent knowledge of quantitative methods for social science research (plus knowledge of statistical packages such as SPSS or STATA; HLM or MLwiN an asset);
– Excellent command of English; German/Italian an asset.
