The award was established in the 1980\u2019s to recognize and honor scholars who have contributed a lifetime record of outstanding scholarship in their respective field of African studies and service to the Africanist community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dr. Toyin Falola is currently a Distinguished Teaching Professor and the Frances Higginbotham Nalle Centennial Professor in History at the\u00a0University of Texas at Austin\u00a0and is a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters and Fellow of the Historical Society of\u00a0Nigeria. \u00a0Falola is the author or editor of more than 90 books, including\u00a0<em>Violence in Nigeria: The Crisis of Religious Politics and Secular Ideologies<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Power and African Cultures<\/em>,and\u00a0<em>Nationalism and African Intellectuals<\/em> and countless articles and book chapters.\u00a0 Falola received his BA and his PhD from the University of Ife where he began his teaching career, moving to the\u00a0University of Texas\u00a0in 1991.\u00a0 He has been the mentor and teacher to innumerable students and future scholars in the United States,\u00a0Africa\u00a0and elsewhere and a relentless supporter of linkages between North American and Africa-based scholars.\u00a0 Through his own very wide-ranging publications, and through various editorships, his organization of conferences and symposia, and his teaching, Falola has made a powerful impact on African studies.\u00a0 A dedicated member of the African Studies Association, Falola currently chairs the Herskovits book prize committee.\u00a0 The recipient of many awards, his memoir,\u00a0<em>A Mouth Sweeter Than Salt,<\/em> was a finalist for the Herskovits prize.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">*****<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Please join us in honoring Dr. Toyin Falola, the 2011 ASA Distinguished Africanist, at the Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony on Thursday, November 17, from 12:30-1:30 PM.<\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"ASA Logo 2\" src=\"http:\/\/img-ak.verticalresponse.com\/media\/f\/b\/5\/fb5b0f362b\/6bf2425cc5\/0ca8abb6b5\/library\/ASA%20Logo%202.JPG\" border=\"0\" alt=\"ASA Logo 2\" hspace=\"0\" vspace=\"0\" width=\"196\" height=\"114\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">ASA 54<sup>th<\/sup> Annual Meeting<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> November 17-19, 2011<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Marriot\u00a0Wardman Park\u00a0Hotel<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Washington, D.C.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On behalf of the African Studies Association Board of Directors, ASA is proud to announce Dr. Toyin Falola as the recipient of the 2011 ASA Distinguished Africanist Award.
