A normal Cameroonian, Ivorian or Nigerian may say: \u201csomewhere in Africa\u201d. For Uganda has no renowned soccer player in the European league nor is she a powerful producer of music singers or dancers like the countries mentioned above. No normal African citizen would imagine that the University system of Uganda belongs to the best in Africa. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mak.ac.ug\">The Makerere University<\/a><\/strong><\/span> is ranked at the position 23 in the recent African Universities ranking (see https:\/\/africa-and-science.com\/?p=60), while neither Cameroonian nor Ivorian University is mentioned in the top 100. The best Nigerian university comes at position 30 (University of Ilorin). Therefore, there is no surprise when the <strong>African Studies Association<\/strong> (USA) which is the world&rsquo;s most important national scientific community devoted to the study of Africa, distinguishes Uganda and it\u2019s University system by granting the privilege of the Abiola Lecture to Professor Sylvia Tamale, former Dean of the Faculty of Law at Makerere.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>********************<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>AFRICAN STUDIES  ASSOCIATION<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>54TH ANNUAL MEETING &#8211; WASHINGTON,  D.C.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2011 ASA Abiola Lecture &amp;  Luncheon<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Sylvia Tamale<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n**Lecture &amp; Lunch $20**<br \/>\n**<strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Saturday,  November 19, 2011, 12:30-2:00 PM<\/span><\/strong>**<\/p>\n<p>The ASA Board  of Directors and the Women\u2019s Caucus invite you to join us for lunch to hear the  2011 Abiola Lecturer, Sylvia Tamale<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u201cWhose Democracy Are We Talking  About?\u00a0 Non-Conforming Sexualities as a<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Metaphor for African  Dictatorships\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This year, the ASA Board and the ASA Women\u2019s Caucus  have worked together to identify an African woman speaker who could stimulate  dialogue and discussion within ASA on human rights, gender concerns, gay rights  and scholar-activist engagement.\u00a0 Our speaker, Professor Sylvia Tamale, is a  leading African feminist lawyer and scholar based in Kampala, Uganda. Professor Tamale  holds a Bachelor of Laws from Makerere University, a Masters in Law from Harvard Law School and a Ph.D. in  Sociology and Feminist Studies from the University of Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>She  is the former Dean of Law at Makerere University and has been a visiting  professor at several academic institutions around the world. In 2006, she  founded the Law, Gender and Sexuality Research Project at Makerere University.  Her numerous publications include: <em>When Hens Begin to Crow:\u00a0 Gender and  Parliamentary Politics in Uganda (1999)<\/em>;  <em>Homosexuality: Perspectives from Uganda <\/em>(2007) and her recent book,  <em>African Sexualities: A Reader<\/em>(2011). She has won several awards for  defending the human rights of marginalized groups such as women, sexual  minorities, people living with HIV\/AIDS and refugees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">****<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To continue the theme, identified panels and  roundtables relevant to this year\u2019s Abiola lecture will be shared in program  packets and in advance via the Women\u2019s Caucus listserv.
