Participants will have the opportunity to explore governance and development at\u00a0American University\u00a0in depth or go behind the scenes to learn about the resources employed by The\u00a0Library of Congress\u00a0and the Smithsonian Museum of African Art. Because this is the first time workshops are being offered they are being offered at no cost.\u00a0The deadline to register is October 1, 2011. Space is limited so register today by clicking\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/cts.vresp.com\/c\/?AfricanStudiesAssoci\/db7b9d1b59\/2ed0055bb7\/0a4bb03a43\/go=workshops\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Library of Congress: African and Middle Eastern Division<\/span><br \/>\nThe workshop will focus on information resources for research on\u00a0East Africa, the\u00a0Horn of Africa, Southern and Lusophone\u00a0Africa, and\u00a0Western Africa\u00a0including the Francophone countries. Workshops will include resources such as newspapers, serials, maps, law publications, photographs, rare books, and videos. Materials from a number of libraries and organizations will be displayed on-site. The sessions will be led by Angel Batiste, Eve Ferguson, Marieta Harper, Laverne Page, and Mary-Jane Deeb. All are librarians in the African and\u00a0Middle East\u00a0Division. This workshop will be held from 12:00 PM \u2013 5:00 PM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Smithsonian National Museum of African Art: ASA Museum Day<\/span><br \/>\nThe National Museum of African Art is hosting a day-long series of workshops which will focus on education, curating, research, archives and gallery tours. Please join the staff for a meet and greet at 10:00 AM, followed by a morning roundtable and lunch from 10:30 AM &#8211; 1:00 PM (limited to 40 participants) led by NMAfA educators and colleagues who will share their experiences with new technologies and how these effect art education activities such as teaching, student learning, and collaboration between different museums. The afternoon workshop and coffee will be held from 1:30 &#8211; 3:30 PM (limited to 40) and led by NMAfA curators with scholars, non-profit funders and museum counterparts focusing on coordinating with local communities in Africa to demonstrate the impact of globalization on information sharing about museum collections. Guided tours include: from 11:00 AM &#8211; 12:00 PM, the Eliot Elisofon Photographic Archives (limited to 20); 1:30 -3:30 PM, guided collection storage visits (limited to 10); 4:00 &#8211; 5:00 PM, gallery tours (limited to 30). All workshops and tours will be led by the curators and educators of the museum who are members of ASA and the Arts Council of the African Studies Association.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">American University: Governance and Development: Reassessing and Reinventing Power Sharing and Decentralization in Africa<\/span><br \/>\nUSAID is partnering with the School for International Service at American University to discuss contemporary approaches to governance in Africa. Workshop participants will analyze recent power sharing agreements and critically evaluate decentralization reforms. Senior staff will identify comparative lessons learned and explore how these particular reforms impact democracy and economic development on the continent.
