However, the rise of various militant/fundamentalist groups since independence has led to the destruction of existing infrastructures as well as heighted the level of insecurity in the country, thus leading to further economic crises in the nation. This was the case in the 1980’s during the reign of terror of the Maitatsine group, as well as the destruction of oil installations by the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) up to the eve of the 2011 general elections. Presently, the focus is on a new group Jama’atu Ahliss-Sunnah Lidda’awati Wal Jihad, popularly known as Boko Haram. This paper seeks to review selected cases in the country since the 1980’s as well as examine how the existence and operations of these groups is affecting infrastructure and Economic development, especially as these activities have tend to make economic activities and investment unsafe.

Key Words: Terrorism, Religious Fundamentalism, Infrastructure, Economic Development.

Source: Africa map, google.com/search

The author:

AKUBOR Emmanuel Osewe (PhD), Department of History, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

The complete article is available at the following link:

Terrorism in Nigeria- Article of Emmanuel OSEWE- October 27th-2015

It has been argued over and over again that the country, despite her wealth of endowment (both human and natural resources) has continued to degenerate in term of infrastructure and Economic development.
