African\u00a0studies emerged in the 1950s and 1960s as the academic outcome\u00a0of continental\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0liberation.\u00a0 Social science research broke free of the political\u00a0chains of\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0colonialism without totally disengaging itself from\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0colonialism\u2019s legacy, but\u00a0\u00a0African studies entered the picture under the general rubric of\u00a0\u00a0Area Studies,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0whereby African countries moved from being the \u201cobject\u201d to the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201csubject\u201d of\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0academic discourse.\u00a0 Other regional specializations were the\u00a0\u00a0Middle East,\u00a0Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the commonalities of\u00a0\u00a0the ex-colonial world\u2019s experience saw the Canadian Association of African Studies link up with\u00a0\u00a0the others as the Canadian Council of Area Studies Learned\u00a0Societies, a now\u00a0\u00a0defunct organization which started in the early 1990s with the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 advent of\u00a0\u00a0globalization.<\/p>\n

If\u00a0political decolonization gave birth to a new scholarship, the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 late 1970s and\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1980s witnessed another sea change associated with the term\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 postcoloniality,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 most associated with Edward Said\u2019s attack on Oriental\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 scholarship which\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 demonized\u00a0 \u201cthe other\u201d.\u00a0 A positive impact of what is sometimes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 known\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 as the postmodern, linguistic, or cultural turn, has been a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 switch of focus\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 from political economy and social structure to culture,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 discourse, gender and\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 race.\u00a0 A negative impact has been the continuing hegemony of\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Eurocentrism\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in scholarship, publishing and institutional development.\u00a0 Some\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 would\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 argue that Africanist scholarship is as \u201cunderdeveloped\u201d in the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 post-Cold war\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 globalized world as African economies were under colonialism and\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 structural\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 adjustment.<\/p>\n

African\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 studies is inclusive of many disciplines but is dominated by the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 social\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 sciences; however, since the cultural turn it has incorporated\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 philosophy,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 religion, literature and literary criticism, while the borders\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 among history,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 politics, anthropology and sociology, while not transcended, has\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 been partly\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 broached.\u00a0 African studies now incorporates the Atlantic and\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Indian Ocean\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 worlds, transnational and comparative studies, histoire\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 crois\u00e9e<\/i>,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 migration patterns and diasporas.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0conference welcomes reflections on the past, present and future\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 trajectories of\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the social sciences and humanities under the banner African\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 studies.\u00a0 How\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 have the discrete disciplines developed; what have been the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 theoretical and\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 methodological changes that have accompanied postcolonial\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 studies; how can the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 disciplines be better integrated without sacrificing their\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 rigour and\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 epistemological foundations; should we be multidisciplinary or\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 antidisciplinary; how relevant is the academy to the condition\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of Africa?<\/p>\n

While we\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 welcome papers specifically addressed to these broad questions,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 conference\u00a0will be organized so that most panels are\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 multidisciplinary,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 giving scholars a chance to enter a dialogue with their\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 colleagues in other\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 disciplines.\u00a0 Hence the themes of the conference will be divided\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 up into\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 segments of \u201cAfrican Studies\u201d to incorporate several\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 disciplinary and\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 multidisciplinary subjects.<\/p>\n

Certains pourraient m\u00eame affirmer que le champ\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 d\u2019\u00e9tude africaniste\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 reste autant \u00ab\u00a0sous-d\u00e9velopp\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb dans l\u2019apr\u00e8s Guerre froide ou la\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 p\u00e9riode\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 de mondialisation que les \u00e9conomies africaines l\u2019\u00e9taient sous la\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 colonisation\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 et les plans d\u2019ajustement structurel.<\/p>\n

Les\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00e9tudes africaines, en tant que\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 domaine d\u2019\u00e9tude, incluent plusieurs disciplines mais sont\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 domin\u00e9es par les\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 sciences sociales. Cependant, depuis le tournant culturel, il a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 incorpor\u00e9 la philosophie,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 la religion, la litt\u00e9rature et la critique litt\u00e9raire. Tout cela\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 alors que les\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 fronti\u00e8res entre l\u2019histoire, la politique, l\u2019anthropologie et la\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 sociologie,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 bien que non d\u00e9pass\u00e9es, demeurent tout de m\u00eame partiellement\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 fractur\u00e9es.
