The project is interdisciplinary and, beyond fibre design, will interface with both telecommunication and biophotonic applications. It will be carried out at the Department of Photonics Engineering of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The project will take place in collaboration between the Fiber Optics & Nonlinear Devices Group and the High-Speed Optical Communications Group at DTU Fotonik, as well as NKT Photonics A/S.

This PhD-project is funded through the “e-space” (Enhanced Spatial Light Control in Advanced Optical Fibres) project supported by the Danish Council for Strategic Research.

The project can start as soon as a suitable applicant has been identified.

Project description
The “e-space” project proposes to look into moulding the spatial properties of light and studying how this new dimension can be exploited in a variety of disciplines, including telecommunications and biophotonics. In optical fibre communications, simultaneously transmitting several light beams with different spatial profiles can be used to increase the total capacity, which is urgently required to meet the exponentially increasing demand triggered by the introduction of ubiquitous broadband services. Enhanced and flexible interaction of light with matter could also be achieved by shaping the light beams, which could result in breakthroughs for biomedical applications. The “e-space” project investigates common technology platforms that can be used for such diverse applications.

One of the key tasks of this PhD project is to design and contribute to the manufacturing of speciality optical fibres, using standard solid-core technology or micro-structured fibres, in particular photonic band-gap fibres. The focus will be on designing fibres whose properties are suitable for transmitting high-order modes, as well as fibres through which inter-modal or intra-modal nonlinear interactions can be enhanced.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master degree in physics or engineering, preferably with a documented background in photonics, electromagnetism or fibre optics. In particular, familiarity with techniques for the numerical modelling of waveguides will be considered an advantage.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the project a curious and open mind towards different disciplines, and the ability to communicate with specialists of different scientific fields, is expected.
The project is fairly open to new applications and a high degree of open-mindedness and flexibility, together with a taste for new initiatives will be highly appreciated.

Approval and Enrolment
Scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
