The goal of the center is to use advanced fabrication techniques to nanopattern graphene and other 2D materials so that it acquires novel physical properties, which in turn can be used as a platform for basic science studies, as well as for devices with new functionalities. The research carried out at CNG is cross-disciplinary and it involves theoretical and experimental research from many branches of physical, chemical and engineering sciences.

CNG is a collaboration between three institutes at Technical University of Denmark (DTU): Department of Micro- and Nanotechnology, Department of Photonics, and Department of Physics, and the Faculty of Sciences at Aalborg University. CNG benefits strongly from the access to state-of-the-art experimental facilities of Danchip (fabrication) and DTU CEN (electron microscopy) located on DTU campus, as well as the advanced computational facilities at DTU.

For information on the overall goals of CNG you are welcome to contact Center Leader, Professor Antti-Pekka Jauho, phone: (+45) 4525 6335, or email: Antti-Pekka.Jauho@nanotech.dtu.dk.

The Department of Physics at DTU is inviting applications for a PhD project on computational modeling of novel 2D materials like nanostructured graphene, oxides, and transition-metal dichalcogenides. The focus will be on first-principles calculations of electronic properties like band gaps and electron mobilities. The influence of substrates on the electronic properties of the 2D material will also be explored. The calculations will be performed within the framework of density functional theory (DFT) for ground state properties and time-dependent density functional theory for excited state properties using the GPAW electronic structure code developed at DTU-Physics.

The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic and international scientific environment at the DTU Department of Physics and will work in close contact with researchers at DTU Nanotech. Our own Linux supercomputer cluster, Niflheim, containing 5000+ cores provides optimal conditions for large-scale computer simulations.

Qualifications
Applicants should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree and have a strong background in theoretical solid state physics or physical chemistry. Some knowledge of density functional theory (DFT) and many-body perturbation theory is preferable but not a requirement.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

We offer
We offer an interesting and challenging job in an international environment focusing on education, research, public-sector consultancy and innovation, which contribute to enhancing the economy and improving social welfare. We strive for academic excellence, collegial respect and freedom tempered by responsibility. The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is a leading technical university in northern Europe and benchmarks with the best universities in the world.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.

Further information

Further information may be obtained from Associate Professor Kristian S.
