For all these applications an imperative need for UAV autonomy is the ability to navigate in an environment possibly cluttered with obstacles. One of the research directions of the Human Robot Interaction group is selflocalization, navigation and map building.

Goals of the Thesis:
1. Visualize the 2D (or 3D) indoor localization and navigation of the UAV using an iPad
2. Interaction with a human user by exploiting touch or speech modalities
3. Design an automated motion planner for navigation in the environment, taking into account
constraints such as obstacle avoidance, energy/battery consumption, or formation flight (in
the case of multiple UAVs)

Applicants should have:
• A good knowledge of English (which is the working language)
• Experience with programming (C/C++/JAVA/Matlab)
• Experience with 3D visualization (not mandatory)
Starting date is as soon as possible. Duration depends on the regulations of the student’s university, but it will approximately last 6 to 9 months.
The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer: Handicapped individuals are strongly encouraged to apply, and so are women in areas in which they are underrepresented. If you are interested, please send an application by email including CV and transcript to:
Dr. Paolo Robuffo Giordano

paolo.robuffo-giordano@tuebingen.mpg.de

Source: http://www.kyb.tuebingen.mpg.de/fileadmin/user_upload/files/Career/Open_Positions/master_navi_prg.pdf

The Human Robot Interaction group in the Department Perception, Cognition and Action of the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics (Prof. Heinrich H.
