The research is focused on the development of basic principles of mathematical modeling, the combination of experiments and modeling, conceptual process design, process operations and control as well as the development of numerical algorithms and software-tools. The algorithmic research is integrated in the graduate school AICES and in the German Research School of Simulation Sciences. The research challenges are the modeling of complex systems, data mining and tailored process control.
In the polymerization processes considered in this project, not all state variables can be readily measured. Hence, you will develop model-based methods to estimate these states on-line. As a prerequisite, you will assess and possibly modify the dynamic process models supplied by the project partners to ensure that they are tractable for real-time optimization. Only then can the models be used to estimate the non-measurable states and merge them with measurement signals from traditional hard sensors. In addition to providing joint state information, you will also develop methods to quantify the degree of uncertainty inherent in your state estimates. This will enable robust control of such polymerization processes even in the presence of disturbances. To evaluate your methodology, it is planned to eventually apply it to an industrial plant.
Furthermore, you contribute to lectures, software development and other duties within this chair.

Our offer:
The candidate will be employed as a regular employee.
