He was on his way back from a meeting with president Yoweri Museveni in \u00a0Kampala (Uganda) .<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The world known political leader John Garang, who entirely devoted\u00a0 his life to the independence of his native territory &#8211; South Sudan. For decades, he fought against the Islamic regime of Khartoum with the support of the Sudan People&rsquo;s Liberation Army. The final goal of his life struggle was achieved last week (July 9th, 2011) as\u00a0 South Sudan celebrated its international \u00a0recognition as an independent and Sovereign State- the 54th African State. Obviously, the entire ceremony was inhabited by the ghost of the late charismatic leader of south Sudaneses. In fact, the gigantic statute of his person erected at the headquarters of the South Sudanese Peoples Movement recall to every single citizen the price which has been paid for the achievement of the international recognition of South Sudan as a sovereign State. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Far from the political symbolic importance of the July 9<sup>th<\/sup> event, Africa &amp; Science celebrates the scientist John Garang who defended his PhD thesis in 1981 at the Iowa State University of Science and Technology under the title: \u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/proxy.lib.iastate.edu:2048\/login?url=http:\/\/gateway.proquest.com\/openurl?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info:ofi\/fmt:kev:mtx:dissertation&amp;res_dat=xri:pqdiss&amp;rft_dat=xri:pqdiss:8209113\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Identifying, selecting, and implementing rural development strategies for socio-economic development in the Jonglei Projects Area, Southern Region, Sudan<\/span><\/a>\u201d.
