The group offers a multidisciplinary research environment as well as an active social life. More information can be found on our group and our research activities and interests can be found on http://bios.ewi.utwente.nl/.

The challenge
In this project you will develop Lab on a Chip devices for the size-based separation of DNA and proteins in continuous flow. The device can function as the first stage of a very powerful 2-dimensional separation system and also for sample preparation prior to further analysis. The core of the device will be a separation chamber containing an anisotropic separation matrix. In this matrix the electrophoretic mobility of DNA or protein molecules will depend on the direction of movement, enabling separation when alternating E-fields are applied in (for example) orthogonal directions.

In your Ph.D. project you will design the separation devices and manufacture them in the MESA+ clean room from your materials of choice. You will design and build the measurement setup and finally perform and interpret the measurements. Both DNA and proteins are targeted as analytes.
In your research it will furthermore be important to develop a good theoretical insight in the different factors that contribute to the separation process, which if necessary you will model using an analytical or finite-element based approach.

Our offer
We offer you a PhD position for 4 years. In addition, we offer a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and a number of additional benefits. The labor agreements are in accordance with the CAO-NU for Dutch universities.

Your profile

Candidates can have a varied background, in view of the interdisciplinary nature of the project. The University of Twente is the only campus university in the Netherlands; divided over six faculties we provide more than fifty educational programmes. The University of Twente has a strong focus on personal development and talented researchers are given scope for carrying out pioneering research.

The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) comprises three disciplines that shape Information and Communication Technology. ICT is more than communication. In almost every product we use mathematics, electronics and computer technology and ICT now contributes to all of societies’ activities. The faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. The research which enjoys a high profile both at home and internationally, has been accommodated in the multidisciplinary research institutes MESA+, CTIT and MIRA.

Apply here

Source of the map: The US Department of State.

The BIOS, Lab-on-a-Chip group is part of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, located at the University of Twente (The Netherlands) and is considered as a pioneering group in the field of microfluidics.
