A total of at least 180 credit points (CP) must be earned. The curriculum will be determined and disclosed by the PhD Committee in consultation with the participating departments and clinics. The interdisciplinary courses will be decided by the PhD Committee, while the specialised coursework will be determined and made known by the individual supervisor in consultation with the individual PhD student.

The majority of courses will be conducted by the faculty of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, with supplementary courses conducted by visiting scientists. All courses are to be held in the English language. Credit can be given for suitable courses held as part of a DFG Research Training Programme, for courses at other local scientific institutions of higher education, and at other universities or external institutions. Students are also expected to work independently, e.g. by giving lectures during seminars or by participating in doctoral colloquia. Student’s performance in the required courses of the PhD programme will be evaluated by regular testing and confirmed by the supervisor.
PhD students determine their individual courses of study in accordance with the curriculum of the PhD Commission in consultation with their supervisors. The course of study is approved by the tutorial group. The PhD course must comprise a minimum of 300 hours of seminars and other coursework, of which at least 50% should be mandatory (interdisciplinary or project-related courses) and approx. 50% can be electives.
Once a year, the PhD Committee invites the students to participate in a colloquium open to the University. The students give either a lecture or a poster presentation about the progress made in their projects. Form and content of the presentations will be evaluated.
Usually, the oral interim examination takes place 18 months after beginning the PhD programme as part of the second consultation; it must take place no later than one year before the final examination.
This examination focuses on topics related to the project and the coursework and is conducted by the tutorial group. The student’s knowledge of English and, if necessary, German has to be taken into consideration. If the student fails the interim examination, a second attempt will be scheduled by the tutorial group. This second attempt has to be made at least three months, but no more than six months later. A second failure is final, and the student will be dismissed from the PhD programme. The tutorial group informs the PhD Committee of the results of the interim examination.

Forms of Assessment

PhD thesis, oral examination and presentation, poster presentation, written examination

ECTS-Credits: 180

Course Objectives

The PhD Programme Veterinary Research and Animal Biology of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, offers graduate students an intensive course of study and research. The PhD programme is designed for a period of three years. After completion of the curriculum and successful defence of the thesis, students will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Dr rer nat by the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover.

Costs, Fees and Funding (read more)

No Tuition Fees

Enrolment Fees: 277 EUR per semester

Fee includes a semester ticket covering public transport in the Hannover metropolitan area.

Costs of Living

Approx. 800 EUR per month to cover personal expenses

Required Entry Qualification Profile (read more)

Language Requirements

Applicants must provide proof of their German and English skills.
