The project focuses on the utilization of nanocellulose and nanochitin fibers, which are among the strongest and stiffest natural materials (natural steel or Kevlar). These fibers are nowadays available by special processing of wood or crustaceans and represent a new class of highly attractive and renewable biomaterials. The main scope of this thesis focuses on the preparation of biomimetic composite materials (bulk and fibers) with excellent mechanical properties and added functionality relevant for device applications. The characterization of these materials will make full use of state-of-the art electron and atomic force microscopy, as well as in-depth analysis of the mechanical and functional properties.<\/p>\n
\n
The DWI at the RWTH Aachen University (Germany) provides a multidiscipli-nary, stimulating and open research environment. The project is designed to be at the forefront of present research of biomimetic materials and we aim to publish at the highest-level scientific journals.<\/p>\n
Research in this emerging field will open up career possibilities in both science and industry. We are open to applications of highly motivated and talented students with a solid background in chemistry, physics or related fields.
