With inadequate human capacity in ICT for development research in Africa, much of this research is carried out by researchers outside the region. Although universities have recently established Master’s and PhD programs in this field, resources are limited, and insufficient to support meaningful research of students pursuing careers in this area.In 2009, IDRC supported an awards program managed by the University of Nairobi School of Computing and Informatics. The School has sought to address national and regional needs for ICT and product development as a tool for economic growth and empowerment, through research, innovation, and advanced education in computing and informatics.

The awards project has supported eight doctoral research awards and four full-study master’s students pursuing research on topics related to ICT and development at a number of universities in Eastern and Southern Africa.
