It is available for the academic year 2012-2013<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div>\n<p>The Commonwealth Scholarships  are for students from developing Commonwealth countries for Master\u2019s, PhD, and  split-site (PhD) study in the UK. These scholarships are funded by the UK <a title=\"DFID\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dfid.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Department for  International Development (DFID)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Host Institution(s):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is a nominating agency for Commonwealth  Scholarships in each Commonwealth country. In addition, universities and  university bodies in a number of developing Commonwealth countries are invited  to nominate candidates to the CSC.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/cscuk.dfid.gov.uk\/apply\/developing-cw-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\">List of nominating agencies invited to nominate candidates<\/a>,  with contact details<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/cscuk.dfid.gov.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/nominators-developing-cw-split-site-2012.pdf\">List  of universities\/university bodies invited to nominate candidates for split-site  (PhD) study<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/cscuk.dfid.gov.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/nominators-developing-cw-universities-2012.pdf\">List  of universities\/university bodies invited to nominate their own academic staff  members for Master\u2019s, PhD, and split-site (PhD) study<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Field(s) of study:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can apply for a  Commonwealth Scholarship for the following levels of study: Master\u2019s, PhD, and  <a title=\"Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships\" href=\"http:\/\/cscuk.dfid.gov.uk\/apply\/split-site-scholarships\/\">Split-site<\/a>,  where the CSC supports one year\u2019s study at a UK university as part of a PhD  being undertaken in your home country.<\/p>\n<p>All subject areas are  eligible, although the CSC\u2019s selection criteria give priority to those  applications that demonstrate strong relevance to development. You are requested  to apply for a course of study at a .<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Number of Scholarships: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Approximately 200-230  scholarships are awarded each year. The CSC invites around three times more  nominations than scholarships available \u2013 therefore, nominated candidates are  not guaranteed to get a scholarship. There are no quotas for scholarships for  any individual country. Candidates nominated by national nominating agencies are  in competition with those nominated by universities\/university bodies, and the  same standards will be applied to applications made through either channel.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Target group:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The scholarships are targeted  to Developing Commonwealth Countries (Anguilla,\u00a0 Antigua and Barbuda,  Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Botswana, British Virgin Islands,  Cameroon, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Falkland Islands,\u00a0 Fiji, Gambia, Ghana,  Gibraltar, Grenada, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi,  Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Montserrat, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, Nigeria,  Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Pitcairn, St. Helena, St. Kitts and Nevis, St.  Lucia, St. Vincent, Seychelles *,\u00a0 Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, South Africa,  Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tristan da Cunha,  Turks and Caicos,\u00a0 Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, Western Samoa, Zambia)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scholarship value\/inclusions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each Scholarship  provides:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Student concessionary or  other approved airfare to the United Kingdom and return on expiry of the  Scholarship (the cost of journeys made before final award confirmation will not  normally be reimbursed, nor can fares be paid for a Scholar\u2019s dependants)<br \/>\n\u2022  Approved tuition and examination fees<br \/>\n\u2022 A personal maintenance allowance at  the rate of \u00a3882 per month (\u00a31091 per month for those studying at institutions  in the London Metropolitan area)<br \/>\n\u2022 A grant towards the expenses of preparing  a thesis or dissertation, where applicable<br \/>\n\u2022 An initial arrival allowance,  incorporating an initial clothing grant for Scholars from tropical  countries<br \/>\n\u2022 A grant for expenses for approved travel within the United  Kingdom or overseas<br \/>\n\u2022 A grant towards fieldwork costs for those Scholars  undertaking doctoral studies for whom a case has been made for fieldwork outside  the United Kingdom. This shall not normally exceed one economy class return  airfare to the fieldwork location<br \/>\n\u2022 A paid mid-term fare to their home  country for Scholars on three year doctoral awards. Scholars for whom fieldwork  fares are provided to their home country shall not be entitled to a mid-term  fare home, nor Scholars who have claimed (or intend to claim) spouse or child  allowances for more than 12 months during their award.<br \/>\n\u2022 For married Scholars  selected by the Commission for awards exceeding 18 months, a marriage allowance  of \u00a3220 per month is payable provided that the husband and wife (or civil  partners) are residing together at the same address in the United Kingdom. It is  not paid when a husband or wife (or civil partner) of the Scholar is also in  receipt of an award. For such married couples accompanied by their children, a  child allow ance is payable at the rate of \u00a3138 per month for the first child,  and \u00a3108 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, provided  they are residing with their parents. The Commission\u2019s spouse and family  allowances represent only a contribution towards the costs of family maintenance  in the UK and Scholars should expect and be able to supplement these allowances  to support family members who choose to come to the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Irrespective of the length of  the award, a Scholar who is widowed, divorced or a lone parent will receive an  allowance in respect of the first accompanying child and child allowances for  the second and third accompanying children.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligibility:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To apply for the awards  covered in this prospectus, candidates should:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Be Commonwealth citizens,  refugees, or British protected persons<br \/>\n\u2022 Be permanently resident in a  Commonwealth country other than the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands or the  Isle of Man<br \/>\n\u2022 Be available to commence their academic studies in the United  Kingdom by the start of the UK academic year in September\/October 2012<br \/>\n\u2022  Hold, by October 2012, a first degree of upper second class Honours standard (or  above); or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification,  which will normally be a Master\u2019s degree AND<br \/>\n\u2022 For clinical training in the  fields of medicine and dentistry, have qualified as a doctor or dentist between  1 October 2002 and 30 September 2007. You  <strong>must<\/strong> check with them in the first instance for specific advice  on <strong>how to make an application<\/strong> and for <strong>their own closing  dates<\/strong>. <strong>The CSC cannot accept any applications direct from  candidates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The CSC expects all  candidates being considered for a Commonwealth Scholarship to be nominated by an  approved nominating agency\/university\/university body, and to have completed an  application form using our Electronic Application System (EAS). The EAS will  close to applicants on <strong>7 December 2011<\/strong> and no further  applications can be made after that date.
