Makerere University honoured by the Africa Studies Association (USA)
Where is Uganda located? A normal Cameroonian, Ivorian or Nigerian may say: “somewhere in Africa”. For Uganda has no renowned soccer player in the European league nor is she a powerful producer of music singers or dancers like the countries mentioned above. No normal African citizen would imagine that the University system of Uganda belongs to the best in Africa. The Makerere University is ranked at the position 23 in the recent African Universities ranking (see https://africa-and-science.com/?p=60), while neither Cameroonian nor Ivorian University is mentioned in the top 100. The best Nigerian university comes at position 30 (University of Ilorin). Therefore, there is no surprise when the African Studies Association (USA) which is the world’s most important national scientific community devoted to the study of Africa, distinguishes Uganda and it’s University system by granting the privilege of the Abiola Lecture to Professor Sylvia Tamale, former Dean of the Faculty of Law at Makerere.
