Description A member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,100 people. The Center’s focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health, and matter.At the Institute of Radiooncology – OncoRay scientists specializing in medicine, physics, biology and IT work together to crucially improve the treatment of cancer by administering radiation therapy that is biologically-personalized and technically-optimized.

As part of the Institute, the Department of Medical Radiation Physics, invites applications as PhD Student (m/f/d). The position will be available from 1 April 2019. The employment contract is limited to three years. The regular weekly working time will be 19.5 hours. The place of work is Dresden-Rossendorf.

Tasks:
The aim of the PhD thesis is the combination of parameters from molecular analyses of tumour material with parameters from medical imaging using advanced machine-learning and deep-learning approaches with the aim to improve personalised cancer therapy.
This contains specifically:
-the development and validation of prognostic biomarkers from medical imaging data for patients with head and neck tumours
-the definition of human-understandable imaging parameters and their association with differently expressed molecular pathways or specific molecular markers
-the combination of molecular and imaging parameters in joint biomarker signatures
-the application of modern machine-learning and deep learning algorithms
-pre-processing and evaluation of medical imaging and molecular data

Requirements -Master degree in computer science, biometrics, medical physics, applied mathematics or a closely related field with very good marks
-advanced programming skills are mandatory in at least one programming language (e.g. Python, R, C/ C++)
-knowledge on statistical and machine-learning methods, image analysis and tumour biology is beneficial
-good communication and team working skills in an interdisciplinary environment
-motivation and discipline to carry out reseach independently
-fluently written and spoken English
