Civil Engineering : A PhD scholarship is available at DTU (Denmark)
PhD scholarship in In-Situ Burning of Crude Oils under Arctic Conditions
A PhD scholarship is available at DTU Civil Engineering in the field In-Situ Burning of Crude Oils. The project is funded by a grant from The Danish Council for Independent Research – Technology and Production Sciences to investigate the ignition and burning mechanisms and assess the environmental impact of In-Situ Burning.
The anticipated starting time is December 2013.
Responsibilities and tasks The PhD project will include both the “fire science” and the “environmental science” aspects of ISB in cold climates. The primary objectives are to evaluate the ignition mechanisms and the burning rate of oils on ice experimentally and to assess the environmental impact (e.g. on microorganisms, wildlife) of the residues through sample analysis. The goal is to improve the strategies and the net environmental benefit of, and thereby the success of, oil clean-up after an accidental spill. It is expected that a forecasting model that enables assessment of the feasibility of the technique at full scale will be developed based on the experiments.
The project will be supervised by Associate Professor Grunde Jomaas (main supervisor), Dr. Janne Fritt-Rasmussen (DCE, co-supervisor) and Associate Professor Ali Rangwala (WPI, co-supervisor).
Qualifications Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering.
A strong experimental background is preferred, and a full command of the English language is required.
Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
Assessment The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate Professor Grunde Jomaas.
