Description:
The research programme at the Brandt School looks at conflict management with a special focus on how policy-making and public policy as a research perspective needs to be rethought in the context of conflict resolution and post-conflict peace-building efforts. Upcoming research in the CSMP will especially focus on three aspects: (a) Understanding and analysing different forms of conflicts: It is becoming apparent that conflicts today are driven by a multitude of political and economic factors, be it ethno-political identities or resource scarcity. What kinds of effects of interaction occur? How do these changed conflict dynamics influence conflict management and peace-building? (b) The impact of public policy instruments in crisis and conflict management: In particular, the role of governments and international and non-state actors as policy-makers in conflict areas, fragile states and war-torn countries are considered in the CSMP. How can they manage fragility? What kind of – unintended – consequences do public policy instruments in post-conflict and transition societies have, e.g. on corruption? (c) Peace-building, human rights and development: Conflict transformation is often embedded in long-term processes of norm diffusion and development aid. With this focus the Brandt School intends to synergize different research perspectives. Peace-building, respect for human rights and development – do these three challenges in post-conflict societies go hand in hand or can we rather find conflict of objectives?
The PhD programme is a three-year-track combining independent research and course work on an advanced level. Candidates holding a Master´s degree with a strong research proposal preferably in the fields of post- conflict-management and reconstruction, peace building, institutional development, public administration reform and governance, regional security (esp. developing frameworks for regional security architectures), conflict resolution or terrorism are invited to apply. The strength of the research proposal is one of the major selection criteria.
In the first year of the doctoral studies students deepen their methodological and theoretical competence and work on their language skills. They are required to complete two courses/workshops per year, which are arranged with their academic advisors in advance. In addition, students will work on their research project in independent study units and present their results in research colloquia. In the second year, doctoral students focus on their own research project. Candidates may conduct field research and they may do research abroad either at one of our partner institutions or at an appropriate institution of their own choice or gain teaching/lecturing experience. In their third year, doctoral students will work towards completing their doctoral thesis. The degree is conferred after the public oral defence is completed and final revisions are submitted.
