Do you want to complete a PhD programme in Germany? Then look at this !

Good to know !

« In applying for funding, it may be helpful to explain the special structure of our programme. Most of the listed foundations are German foundations, which pose certain criteria for granting their funds. These criteria may not be formally compatible with the programme so far, as none of the students in the first year is able to name a supervisor and a topic, which is required at some foundations.

The structure of our Ph.D. Programme, a combination between specialization courses and research guided by a supervisor, is new compared to the usual education at the doctoral level in Germany, although this system can be considered as international standard.

In particular, the former personal relationship between the doctoral student and her or his supervisor has been replaced by the responsibility of the entire faculty for all participants of the Ph.D. Programme. Following international practice, participants are guided to their own Ph.D. research via succession of general courses in the first term and more specialized courses in the second term. By the end of the first year, participants should have found a distinct focus for their Ph.D. research together with two main supervisors whose research interests cover the area of the proposed dissertation project. Concentration on this project within the following two years and close contact with their supervisors should allow participants to complete their Ph. D. within a total of three years on average. The language of instruction is English in all courses. The Ph.D. thesis will generally also be written in English.

No supervisor necessary upon entrance

Note, we do not request candidates to have established personal links to one of the faculty members of our graduate programme upon entrance. The candidates are requested to find two supervisors within the first year of our programme. Unlike the previous personalised Ph.D. supervision, this allows foreign students from various countries to enter the programme on base of their previous academic achievements without necessity of personal contacts to our faculty.

Altogether, the amount of time consumed for the achievement of a doctoral grade is well below the usual pace in Germany. This intends to become internationally competitive in the education of high potential scientists.
