South Sudan celebrates independency, « Africa & Science » celebrates the scientist John Garang de Mabior

Bonn on june 23rd, 1945, he passed away on july 30th, 2005 in a helicopter crash with 13 other people. He was on his way back from a meeting with president Yoweri Museveni in Kampala (Uganda) .
The world known political leader John Garang, who entirely devoted his life to the independence of his native territory – South Sudan. For decades, he fought against the Islamic regime of Khartoum with the support of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army. The final goal of his life struggle was achieved last week (July 9th, 2011) as South Sudan celebrated its international recognition as an independent and Sovereign State- the 54th African State. Obviously, the entire ceremony was inhabited by the ghost of the late charismatic leader of south Sudaneses. In fact, the gigantic statute of his person erected at the headquarters of the South Sudanese Peoples Movement recall to every single citizen the price which has been paid for the achievement of the international recognition of South Sudan as a sovereign State.
Far from the political symbolic importance of the July 9th event, Africa & Science celebrates the scientist John Garang who defended his PhD thesis in 1981 at the Iowa State University of Science and Technology under the title: ”Identifying, selecting, and implementing rural development strategies for socio-economic development in the Jonglei Projects Area, Southern Region, Sudan”. We are actually struggling to obtain a copy of his dissertation for the purpose of a recension in our upcoming edition.
