Education for All by 2015: Is the goal still achievable?
UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova remains very optimistic. But the facts indicate a very pessimistic tendency. During the opening of the Economic and Social Council’s High Level Segment, at the United Nations in Geneva on 4 July 2011, she called for more actions: “I am positive we can engage in a new global solidarity compact and start setting the agenda today for after 2015”.
In fact, according to UN statistics, about 69 million school-age children are not in school. Almost half of them (31 million) are in sub-Saharan Africa, and more than a quarter (18 million) are in Southern Asia.
