7 PhD Scholarships in Comp. Neuroscience at the Technische Universität Berlin
The programme starts in October 2012 for a duration of 3 years.
The Research Training Group Sensory Computation in Neural Systems combines techniques and concepts from computational neuroscience, systems neurobiology, and machine learning, in order to specifically address sensory computation. Experimentalists and theoreticians join forces and educate young scientists: (1) to work on interdisciplinary projects investigating brain computation, (2) to exploit recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence for modeling brain function, and (3) to develop new theories of computation hand in hand with well-controlled experiments in order to put functional hypotheses to test. Our long-term scientific vision is to build a theoretical framework for addressing brain computation which is as powerful and as accepted in the neurobiology community as compartmental models are for understanding signal processing in neurons.
Doctoral students are supervised by at least two faculty members, one having an experimental and the other having a theoretical or computational background.
Beside the work on the PhD project, the study program consists of lecture courses and seminars and training of general skills (soft skills) which are essential for successful scientific work. Each PhD student has to take 30 ECTS credit points of course work, which includes 15 credit points each for advanced scientific and soft skills courses. The research training group is integrated into the PhD program of the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Berlin.
Requirements / Qualification
Students with an interest in computational neuroscience and a strong mathematical background are welcome to apply. A M.Sc. or equivalent degree in a relevant subject (e.g., neuroscience, cognitive science, computer science, physics, ?) is required. It is allowed to apply prior to degree completion, successful applicants will be notified about conditional acceptance until completion of their studies. For further details see our application information.
We strongly advise you to check whether your degree entitles you to gain a doctoral degree within Germany. Furthermore, students need to have a good command of the English language.
Candidates are strongly encouraged to contact potential supervisors and discuss potential projects with them prior to application)
Two letters of reference must be sent by the reference persons per email within deadline directly to: graduateprograms @ bccn-berlin.de
