PhD opportunities in Economics – Nouveau programme de troisième cycle interuniversitaire (NPTCI) en Économie

Many African economies lack a critical mass of well-trained economists who can analyse and develop homegrown solutions to key development problems. The situation in francophone Africa is particularly acute. Furthermore, graduate students lack the support needed to undertake the meaningful field research that is critical for the effective and timely completion of their theses and training.
In 1992 the Conférence des institutions d’enseignement, de recherche économique et de gestion en Afrique (CIEREA) created the Programme de troisième cycle interuniversitaire (PTCI) to respond to key concerns associated with developing economics research within West Africa’s higher education system. In 2007, CIEREA created the Nouveau programme de troisième cycle interuniversitaire (NPTCI) en économie to meet the increasing demand for economics expertise in the region, and to respond to lingering difficulties associated with implementing research procedures and with providing top quality tertiary training in economics. NPTCI provides training and support to graduate economics and management programs within CIEREA’s network of 33 institutions in 18 francophone countries. It seeks to ensure that economic research capacity needs are met and that the priorities of each country are addressed and integrated in the context of the region.
The IDRC-supported project will grant 18 doctoral research awards over three years to students pursuing economics research at francophone African universities in the following areas of study: agriculture, environment, gender, poverty reduction, knowledge and innovation, education, and health. The project will help strengthen the capacities of researchers to undertake policy-relevant research to influence the development of sound economic policies and to address challenges in the region.
