Funded MA or PhD Research Position in Political Ecology / Conservation/ Migration
Dr. Elizabeth Lunstrum (Department of Geography, York University) is recruiting an MA and/or PhD student beginning September 2012 to work on research related to conservation, labour migration, and/or displacement in southern Africa’s Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park (GLTP).The research will be part of a larger SSHRC-funded project entitled “Reorganizing borders, reorganizing mobility: transfrontier conservation, labour migration, and the transformation of the Mozambican/South African border.” The project investigates the changing nature and function of the Mozambican / South African border within the GLTP and how this is impacting (1) migrant labourers traveling through the park and (2) communities living in and near the Mozambican portion of the park.
The position will fund research in South Africa and/or Mozambique related to the larger project and the student’s MA or PhD thesis and will enable opportunities for joint publications.
Applicants must have an appropriate background in Human Geography, Political Ecology, Environmental Studies, African Studies, Migration Studies, and/or Political Science. Applicants with previous research experience will be particularly competitive. Previous research experience in southern Africa and/or ability to communicate in Portuguese, Afrikaans, and/or Tsonga/Shangaan is particularly welcome but not required.
