Theology as Science: Scholarships for African Students in Germany

The newly-established graduate programme « Theologie als Wissenschaft” – a joint programme between Goethe University, Frankfurt, Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, the Institute for Jewish Studies, Heidelberg and the Sankt Georgen Institute for Philosophy and Theology, Frankfurt, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) – invites applications for the following positions as part of its first funding phase which is due to commence on 1st April 2012:

12 Scholarships for Doctoral Candidates (€1,200 pcm)

(limited to a maximum of three years)

The Graduate Programme

The graduate programme will examine the constitution of reflexivity within different traditions of belief from an historical and systematic perspective, focusing on exemplary fields of conflict between the religious traditions themselves and with their ‘secular’ surroundings. The following subjects fall into the remit of this: systematic theology, historical theology und exegesis (Jewish, Islamic, Protestant and Catholic), philosophy and philosophy of religion (systematic und historical) as well as ancient history. Application Requirements

Applicants should hold a university degree (Diplom, Staatsexamen, M.A. or equivalent qualification) in theology, Jewish Studies, Islamic Studies, philosophy, history or a related subject of an above average classification and have sufficient knowledge of German and English or, failing this, be prepared to attain a suitable level of fluency in both languages within in a reasonable period of time. Applicants should have excellent team-working skills and be able to demonstrate evidence of their academic knowledge and show an interest in the work of the GRK and be prepared for new experiences in an interdisciplinary and interreligious context as well as be willing and able to reside in the Rhein-Main-Neckar region.

  • a curriculum vitae
  • a letter of motivation
  • a copy/copies of your degree certificate(s)
  • an electronic version of your final dissertation
  • a letter of recommendation from a former supervisor/university lecturer
  • a list of publications to-date
  • a fiveto ten page-long research proposal for the planned thesis
  • a timeplan in which it should be completed
